Welcoming back Defected Records queen "Sam Divine"

A born entertainer with a burning desire to play music to people around the world, Sam Divine’s enigmatic sets are an effortless schooling in pure, unadulterated house. From her early days as the sole member of the Defected street team in Ibiza to fronting their radio show and now headlining some of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, The First Lady of Defected, has become an intrinsic part of the UK house music scene. The seeds of Sam’s DJ career can be traced back to a pair of belt drive turntables and a battered Numark mixer set up in her Mum’s shed; a pirate radio show broadcast from her bedroom using ‘borrowed’ equipment from the local college and MSN Messenger, and time spent expanding her musical knowledge working at Spin Central in her hometown of Weston-super-Mare and Chemical Records in Bristol. A chance encounter with then Defected Radio host, Aaron Ross, in Notting Hill in the early 00s, led Sam to Ibiza where she quickly became an integral figure in the West End. Since then she’s played at some of the island’s biggest clubs year upon year, holding down residencies at Pacha, Mambo, Amnesia, Eden and Ushuaïa, and sharing space with some of the greatest names in dance including Frankie Knuckles, Master’s At Work, MK, DJ Spen, KiNK, Sandy Rivera and The Shapeshifters.

Sam launched her own highly successful imprint, DVINE Sounds, in 2015. To date, the label has seen 58 releases, helping to propel talented up and coming artists into the spotlight. Her own foray into production began with a remix of the classic garage anthem ‘Flowers’ that proved a hit, reaching the top spots on Traxsource and Beatport. A remix of Amira’s 1997 garage hit, ‘My Desire’, followed in 2019. In 2020 DVINE will celebrate its fifth birthday with the label evolving as a brand with events, boat parties, a stage at We Are FSTVL and a return to ADE. Sam will also launch Round Our House, a series of parties that encapsulate an intimate, house party vibe. 2019 was a year of firsts for Sam with her debut appearance at London’s Printworks venue, where she returned on New Year’s Day alongside her Defected crew. In September she was invited by Radio 1 tastemaker Pete Tong to record a coveted Essential Mix – a true marker of how far her career has come. 2019 also marked Divine’s first Mixmag Lab NYC set. All this on top of touring globally, playing 21 festivals worldwide, an epic gig at the top of London’s iconic Tower Bridge and raising over £40,000 for Breast Cancer Research through her charity D-Vita. Sam shows no sign of slowing down in 2020 with a number of Defected parties already in the diary, a return to the festival circuit, an Australasian tour and solo tours throughout North America and Canada. December will also see the return of last year’s sold-out Openers tour with Sam playing all night long across two weekends in December. 2020 brings new music in collaboration with Australian DJ and producer, Kormak, on Defected as well as a new EP on her own label. With her passion and dedication to her music beyond doubt, Sam Divine is a musician who will continue to evolve and grow.

VNSSA (usa/dirtybird/higher ground) has always had a passion for music even as a child. The Newport Beach native now calls Los Angeles home and has fully immersed herself in the electronic music scene. Although Santa never gave her the turntables she wanted at a young age, she soon found herself drumming in local rock and indie rock bands. From there she learned to DJ, and started performing at local clubs and house parties.

Her debut single was released in early 2018 and she has since released multiple singles and EPs on labels such as Dirtybird Records, Higher Ground, Techne, Rules Don't Apply, Sweat It Out, Realm, and Trippy Ass Technologies, including a Beatport #1 with “Word” a single in collaboration with Walker & Royce on Black Book Records/HotBoi. Catching the platform's attention, she was later named a Beatport “Next” artist, and received further support from tastemaker platforms like This Song Is Sick and Data Transmission.

Her live sets cover the length and breadth of house, techno, and breaks, although don't be surprised to hear some classic disco as well. VNSSA performs regularly at well-known venues and festivals all over the world. In addition to playing her own shows, she has performed with numerous prominent acts such as Chris Lake, Claptone, A-Trak, Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Nora En Pure, Chris Lorenzo, Walker & Royce, Cassian, Fisher, AC Slater, and many more.

Most recently, she remixed Claude Vonstroke's "These Notes In This Order" into a rolling techno smash that's been played by top international Dj's around the world including Green Velvet, Adam Beyer, Dom Dolla, and others.

Looking ahead, VNSSA has dropped an EP on Diplo's esteemed Higher Ground imprint entitled “Music4TheMasses”, a milestone release for this fast-rising talent, along with remixes for LP Giobbi, Claude VonStroke, and Walker & Royce. She has also performed at some of the biggest festivals in North America, including Okeechobee, Coachella, Lightning In A Bottle, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Shambhala, Splash House, Electric Zoo Festival and Firefly Festival.

VNSSA does not exist in the world of music because it is her choice, she exists in it because it is her calling.

Robag Wruhme [kompakt/pampa/ger]

  • 23 Cavill Avenue Surfers Paradise, QLD, 4217 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The artistic vita of Gabor Schablitzki, rather known to the raver as Robag Wruhme, is a story of gleaming moments of glory and brilliant achievements. The most brilliant of them all must be to have survived for a couple of decades in the ego-show that is the Techno-biz without a copy/paste-prepped testimonial like this one right here. Hats off to that! Although, time and time again, second-hand-information concerning Mr. Wruhme not uncommonly led to ludicrous distortion of reality. Therefore now and here, the confirmed yet no less vibrant and epic truth about the groove-maestro from the southern part of the eastern zone.

July 3rd 1983 - Schablitzki sees the light of day - or rather: the greyed out real-socialistic sight of Rudolstadt. The educated reader will instantly be hit by the significance of the date as if it was a bookshelf, collapsed under the weight of too many Reclam-volumes. Until today, Schablitzki indulges in the imagination of breathing the 100 year old reincarnated ghost of Franz Kafka into his bars and loops.

Birth is followed by being raised in Apolda. Apolda sadly is carving out an existence as overlooked spot on the map. The eye tends to be magnetized by the flashier places Jena and Weimar in the neighbourhood. So let's have a little excursus on Apolda. The biggest bell of the Cologne Cathedral stems from Apolda. Apolda = bell town. Apolda holds his own car manufacturing - the Apollo Werke. In 1904 the first ever automobile is chugging off right there - and that's before MB, BMW, VW, Porsche, Audi et al are in the picture. Apolda = car town. The dog breed Dobermann has its roots in Apolda, too. Mr. Dobermann was dog-taxman at the time and began his concrete dog-work between 1875 and 1880. The eponymous woof-woof being the outcome. Apolda = Dobermanntown. End of excursus.

Young Schablitzki gets exposed to Breakdance and HipHop - astoundingly even assisted by the top-ranks of the Politburo. The socialist civil rights activist and entertainer Harry Belafonte gets some serious homeboy-treatment by Honni (Erich Honecker) himself. So the Belafonte produced streetdance-flick "Beat Street" is made publicly available and shown in schools across the GDR. Little did the Volkskammer-dudes know, what kind of buzz this movie would create. Electric Beat Crew, Pioniermanöver, Gramont City Dancers - and Schablitzki is f***in' hooked!

And suddenly, the iron curtain falls. Everyone's kinda confused. After the initial euphoria receded, it seemed not that easy to align the compass. While socialism was up and running, Schablitzki tended to try out art and music studies. After the wall came down, priorities shifted. He decided to invest his "welcome dough" (100 DM) in 7 inches and to take things as they come.

Several band-projects followed. Bands that borrowed some source-material from East- and West-German scene-standards and covered their way from Die Art and Sandow through to Einstürzende Neubauten. The first proper release was laid down by Beefcake, a project together with Volker Kahl. At that point the knack for electronic experiments unfolded.

Soon after, Schablitzki felt the urge to also provide dancefloors with quality material. An undertaking, he pursued with the now legendary Wighnomy Brothers venture. He produced all of their stuff. Many of those tunes are collectively known as club classics.

Meanwhile, Schablitzki recalls the funny idea to spell names backwards - a very popular concept in primary school! So Gabor turns into Robag. With his family name being just an unsolvable phonetic obstacle, the much easier pronounceable Wruhme comes into play. An unbridled solo career takes its course. From that point on, business is booming.

Then one day, DJ Koze rings up and whispers the tender salutation "Na, Dicker..." through the receiver. Begin of a long lasting friendship. The [kəʊ.zi]-curated imprint Pampa Records opens its doors for Wruhme and it is indeed very [kəʊ.zi] there, so Wruhme stays and releases quite a few records. One of them being the 2011 issued opus magnum "Thora Vukk".

In June 2019 the saga continued with the album "Venq Tolep" on Pampa Records: "... his prettiest, silkiest, and most poignant minimal electronic music ever" (Philip Sherburne, Pitchfork).

Capable of turning it out on any dancefloor he's been invited onto the biggest stages, from Glastonbury to Fuji Rock; Snatch! has hosted its own tent at Creamfields and Tomorrowland, while the Riva Starr touch has been sought to open for Jamiroquai in Ibiza and to work with artists as diverse as Horace Andy, Jocelyn Brown, Green Velvet or Arthur Baker - or to remix Wiley or London Grammar.

An insatiable musical appetite he’s a singular talent able to bag an improbable, global, runaway iTunes smash hit while still releasing on the hottest underground labels around, from Dirtybird to Hot Creations, Truesoul to Crosstown Rebels and Play It Say It to Moon Harbour. The ‘The Loft EP’ on Cajual, has been a Beatport and Traxsource chart smash for over 3 months and a record that received an unprecedented continuous 9 weeks support on BBCR1. Making this cross-pollination seem so effortless has won a who's who of supporters, from Giles Peterson to David Squillace, Adam Beyer to Pete Tong and Annie Mac. But then it is in Riva Starr's world, where the unexpected is the norm, and the club is just the first step on a wide musical journey...

Hailing from Southampton, UK, BISCITS (Luke Jones) has had a seminal impact on the global Tech House scene over the last few years. Likened to some of the genre’s leading names, including Diplo, Dom Dolla, Fisher and WADE, BISCITS’ reputation for full-bodied peak-time cuts has seen him attain an impressive global appeal in a relatively short space of time.

Standout releases on some of the industry’s most respected imprints, including SOLOTOKO, Higher Ground, Black Book and Sola, have cemented BISCITS’ acclaim as a sought-after producer of cutting-edge dance records that have received support from artists and music appreciators alike. His ‘Wait A Minute’ release on Sonny Fodera’s SOLOTOKO in 2021 secured a Beatport Top 5 chart place whilst receiving support from Fisher, Diplo and countless others.

BISCITS also prides himself on regular support of his music from Pete Tong & Danny Howard on BBC Radio 1, Sirius XM, triple J, Slam Radio, Radio FG and many more. It’s fair to say that the BISCITS sound remains entrenched at the precipice of modern dance music.

An undeniably talented remixer, BISCITS has also reimagined the work of several high-profile artists, including Ed Sheeran, Moby and Becky Hill, amongst others. His debut album also saw him collaborate with several artists, including Karen Harding, Good Boys, Everyone You Know, Sonny Fodera and more.

Outside of the studio, BISCITS maintains a busy international touring schedule. A certified globetrotter, his performance passport is littered with stamps from North America, South America, the UK, Europe and Australia. Some of his most notable clubland highlights include performing alongside Gorgon City, Fisher, Chris Lake, Cloonee, Sidepiece and WADE across the likes of Reading & Leeds Festival, EDC Vegas & Orlando, Tomorrowland and support on Sonny Fodera’s US Tour in 2022.

You’ll be hard-pushed to find an artist with a higher commitment to his work in and out of the studio who receives more regular plaudits from peers and fans worldwide. BISCITS continues to make strides as one of the industry’s most promising and fastest-growing talents, with much left to give.
